What is a soap gift box?

A soap gift box is a lidded box. The base holds the bars and a separate lid drops over the top. It is the format to choose when the bars are going to be given away, not just sold one at a time from a shelf.

Because the lid is its own piece, there is room for a layer of paper shred, a printed card or a second and third bar. Makers use it for a trio of guest bars, a cold process bar paired with a shampoo bar, or one special bar that deserves a bit of ceremony.

It also looks the part on a gift table, which a plain band cannot always manage.

Who orders lidded boxes for soap?

Mostly makers who sell sets. A market stall in the rain does well with a box that closes firmly and can be handed over in one piece. A gift shop wants something that stacks neatly and can be picked up without a hand on the soap.

Hotels and bed and breakfasts order them for guest soaps left in the room. Wedding and event favour makers use one small box per guest, often with a ribbon. Melt and pour makers use them for novelty sets, and hot process makers for chunky rustic bars.

Birthday and thank-you gifts are the quiet workhorse of the lot.

How do you size a gift box for your bars?

Start with the bar, not the box. Measure length, width and height in mm once the bar has cured, because a bar shrinks slightly as it loses water over a few weeks. The box inside is the bar plus about 2 mm each way, which leaves 1 mm a side.

For a set, tell us the layout: bars side by side, stacked, or one bar with space for a card. The table shows common UK bars and one way each might sit.

Kraft card or white card for the box?

Kraft card gives a natural, earthy look and suits cold process bars with plain tops and a little ash. White card takes full colour cleanly, so a bright pink or a detailed illustration stays true to your artwork.

On kraft, a white ink panel lets a logo stand out against the brown. If that is the look you want, read about printing your logo on kraft before you finalise artwork.

One caution. Card can mark if a bar is still sweating, and fragrance oils can bleed into it, so let bars cure fully before they go in the box. A sheet of paper around each bar keeps the oil off the card.

What can you print on the lid and base?

The lid is your shelf face, so most makers put the name and scent on top and keep the sides quiet. The inside of the lid is free for a short message that only the person opening the box sees.

Can a gift box have an insert or a window?

Yes to both. A card insert keeps bars apart so corners do not rub in transit, and it lets a set sit in a neat pattern instead of sliding about. See our soap boxes with card inserts for how the cut-outs work.

A window patch in clear film, in any shape, lets a buyer see the colour of the bar through the lid. The film keeps fingers off the bar, but it is no substitute for curing, so box only bars that are fully dry.

A round window suits a single swirled bar, while a long slot shows off a row of three.

How does ordering work, step by step?

The steps are the same for one design or four scents. Here they are in order.

1. Send your bar size in mm, how many bars go in each set and the board you prefer.
2. Get your quote by email within one working day.
3. Receive a free design proof and ask for changes until you are happy.
4. Approve the proof. Production takes 4 to 6 working days.
5. Receive free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2 to 3 working days.
6. Check the boxes and report any misprint or damage within 10 days for a reprint or refund.

Will bars arrive without scuffed corners?

A lidded box protects corners better than a loose wrap, but fit decides everything. Too much room and the bars slide. Too little and the lid bulges. Paper shred, a folded card or an insert takes up the slack.

Bevel the edges of a loaf-cut bar and the lid slides on more easily, with less chance of catching a sharp corner.

What should the soap label say?

On a gift box of soap in the UK you will usually see the product name, weight, ingredients and the maker's details, with cosmetic rules sitting behind all of it. Check the current UK cosmetics rules before you lock your artwork.

Many makers print the full ingredient list on the base of the box and keep the lid clean. Others use a separate sticker, such as paper labels for soap bars, so the box can stay the same across scents.

Leave a clear space on the base if you plan to add a batch number or a best before date by hand.

What does a gift box cost?

Gift boxes start from £0.25 a box. The final figure depends on size, board, print and finish, so every order is quoted by email within one working day.

Minimums are low and quoted per job, so a first run for a new scent is fine. If you only need a plainer single-bar pack, compare plain kraft soap boxes as well.
