Measure the cured bar

Weigh and measure bars once they have finished curing. A bar that shrinks a little after cutting will rattle in a box sized from day one.

Soap Bar Boxes

Nothing is printed until you approve the proof.

What are soap bar boxes?

A soap bar box is a snug carton made for one bar. It is not a general gift box with a bar sliding about inside. The walls sit about 1 mm off each side of the soap, so the bar stays put on a shelf, in a parcel and in a customer's hand.

This is the style most makers start with. One bar, one box, your name on the front. You get a tidy shelf look at a market stall or in a gift shop without wrapping each bar by hand at the end of a long cutting day.

Sleeve and tray: how does the default style work?

The default build is a sleeve and tray. A shallow tray holds the bar. A printed sleeve slides over the top and hides the join. Because the tray is a separate piece, you can lift the bar out to show a customer, then slide it back without tearing anything.

Photo four shows a close cousin of this idea: a white lidded box with the lid lifted and the bar sitting inside. Both open without scissors, which matters when a shopper wants to smell a bar before buying it.

White card is the default board because it takes bright colour cleanly. Pick kraft card for a natural look. Colours print a little softer on kraft, and a white ink panel can lift your logo, as covered in printing your logo on kraft.

How do you size a box to your bar?

Measure the finished bar, not the mould. Cold process bars shrink slightly as they cure, and slices from a hand-cut loaf are rarely identical from one end to the other. Our boxes are made to the bar, with the inside about 2 mm bigger each way.

  1. Let the bars cure fully and settle to their final weight.
  2. Measure length, width and height in mm at the widest point.
  3. Weigh three bars from the same batch and note the grams.
  4. Check the edges. A bevel or a rounded corner can mean a slightly taller box.
  5. Send us the numbers and we confirm the inside size on the proof.

If your cutter gives a few millimetres of variation, give us the largest bar and say so.

Which bar sizes do UK makers order most?

These are common starting points rather than limits. Your cutter and your recipe decide the real size.

Bar size (mm)Approx. weightTypical use
90 x 60 x 25About 100 gStandard retail bar
75 x 50 x 25About 60 gGuest bar for hotels and guest houses
100 x 65 x 30About 150 gLarge gift bar
70 x 50 x 20About 50 gSmall favour or sample bar
85 x 60 x 30About 110 gDeeper bar from a thicker cut

Should you add a window?

A clear film patch lets customers see the colour and swirl of a bar without opening the box. Photo two shows front windows on printed boxes. The patch can be any shape, from a plain rectangle to a soft curve.

The film keeps fingers off the bar. It does not make a bar immune to damp or warmth, and scent can still drift through the card, which many makers like on a shop shelf.

Think about position and bar finish first. Window patches and moisture explains what to check.

What can you add to the box?

Most extras are chosen at the quote stage, so tell us what you have in mind and we price it for your job.

  • A window patch in any shape
  • A card insert to hold the bar or a small second item
  • Print inside the lid or tray for a surprise on opening
  • One or two ink colours, or full colour
  • A white ink panel on kraft card
  • Matt, gloss, soft-touch, foil, spot varnish or embossing

Will card mark if a bar is still sweating?

It can. A bar that has not finished curing may sweat, and fragrance oils can bleed into card and leave a darker patch. Let bars cure properly before they go into a box.

Ash on a cold process top, a soft edge from a warm room, a bar still firming up: white card shows all of these first. If you are unsure, box one bar for a week and look at it before you commit a whole batch.

Keep boxed bars away from damp bathrooms and the wet corner of a market stall table.

How do artwork and proofing work?

Send a logo, a label scan or a rough idea. We set it onto the template for your bar size and email a free design proof before anything is printed. Check spelling, ingredient lines and colours on the proof, then approve it or ask for changes.

Photo three shows a bar in a dark printed band, a lighter option if you want less card around the soap. Compare the options in box versus sleeve versus wrap.

What goes on the box for UK sale?

Plan the back of the box around what a bar sold in the UK usually shows: the product name, the weight, the ingredients and your details as the maker. Cosmetic rules apply, so check the current UK cosmetics rules before you finalise the text.

The front suits your name, scent and a short line. The back and base suit the small print. Leave a little space for a sticker if you change a scent between batches.

Posting soap bar boxes without scuffed corners

Bar boxes are small and light, which helps. Corners take the knocks. Pack boxes so they cannot slide, use a mailer or carton with no loose space, and keep heavy parcels off the top.

Our notes on packing soap for posting cover fill, tape and carton choices for small orders.

What does it cost and how long does it take?

Boxes are from £0.25 a box. Every order is quoted by email within one working day, and low minimums are quoted per job.

Production takes 4 to 6 working days after you approve the proof. Free tracked UK mainland delivery then takes 2 to 3 working days. Misprints or damage reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Ready to start? Ask for a quote.

Soap Bar Boxes questions

More answers in Help, or call +44 7578 382054 or message us on WhatsApp.

What is the difference between a bar box and a gift box?

A bar box is cut close to one bar, with about 1 mm of space a side. A gift box is roomier and suits several items or a tied ribbon.

What size box do I need for a 100 g bar?

A common 100 g bar is 90 x 60 x 25 mm, so the box inside is about 92 x 62 x 27 mm. Always measure your own cured bar, as cutters differ.

Can I order a box for a 60 g guest bar?

Yes. A typical 75 x 50 x 25 mm guest bar suits hotels and guest houses, and the box is made to that size with the usual 2 mm allowance.

What does sleeve and tray mean?

A tray holds the bar and a printed sleeve slides over it. The bar lifts out easily so customers can smell it, and the sleeve slides back on.

White card or kraft card for my soap?

White card gives brighter colour. Kraft gives a natural, earthy look, and a white ink panel helps a logo stand out against it.

Does a bevelled or rounded bar still fit?

Yes. The box is a plain rectangle, so a bevelled edge or soft corner just leaves a tiny gap there. Measure at the widest point and send us the largest bar from your loaf.

Will fragrance oil stain the card?

It can if a bar is still sweating or heavily scented. Let bars cure fully first, and test one boxed bar for a week before a full run.

Where should the window sit on a bar box?

Most makers centre it on the front of the sleeve over the best face of the bar. If your swirl runs along one side, offset the patch to catch it. We show the placement on the proof.

Can you add a card insert?

Yes. A card insert can hold a bar firmly or add a spot for a small extra such as a sample. Tell us the second item's size on the quote.

How do I get artwork onto the box?

Upload a logo or rough layout, or start from Design Your Soap Box. We email a free proof for you to approve first.

Do you offer lower runs for a new soap range?

Minimums are low and quoted per job, so a small batch of a new scent is fine. Tell us how many bars a loaf gives and we advise.

Can shampoo bars or bath bombs go in these boxes?

These boxes are made for rectangular bars. Round shampoo bars are often about 65 mm across and bath bombs about 65 mm round, so send us the diameter and we suggest the box style that suits.
