Window Soap Box details
Sizing a window box
Measure the bar's length, width and height in mm and send them over. The box inside is your bar plus about 2 mm each way, so the soap sits snug behind the film.

Design Your Soap Box
Drop your logo on a real photo of our window soap boxes, move it and size it, and send it. A designer sets it up to your bar size and sends a free proof.

Your logo sits on a real photo of our packaging. A designer redraws it to scale on your box and sends a free proof before anything is printed.
What a window soap box actually is
A window soap box is a normal printed carton with a hole cut in the front and a clear film patch glued behind it. The bar sits snug inside, and the buyer sees colour, swirl and texture without touching anything.
Ours are made to the bar. The inside measures your bar plus about 2 mm each way, which is 1 mm a side. That stops the soap rattling and stops the film bowing. The default is a tuck end style in kraft card, sized for a 90 x 60 x 25 mm bar of about 100 g. The same carton without a cut-out is available as plain tuck end soap boxes, if some of your range is better kept hidden.
Why show the soap at all?
Because a handmade bar is its own best advert. A hot process bar with a rustic top looks nothing like a melt and pour bar with a sharp mica line, and a closed box hides both. On a market table, people pick up what they can see.
A window also saves you describing the look in words. You do not need to print 'swirled' on the front if the swirl is right there. Gift shops like it for the same reason: a shop owner can check the colour without opening a box and leaving a fingerprint on a bar that is not theirs.
Not every bar suits a window. A plain white bar with no colour may look flat under film, and a heavily scented bar is happier behind card. Think about the soap first and the box second.
Which window shape suits your bar?
Any shape works, because the cut is made to your artwork. These are the ones soap makers ask for most.
- Rectangle: a clean strip across the top third, good for a bar with a bold stripe.
- Oval: frames a single swirl and sits well beside large lettering.
- Round: a neat circle that echoes a round shampoo bar or bath bomb.
- Wavy or scalloped edge: borrows the movement of a cold process swirl.
- Full front panel: almost the whole bar shows, with card left only at the edges.
- Small peep hole: just enough to show one colour, with the rest left for print.
Ask for a shape that is not on the list and we will check it at proof. Very fine points and thin slivers can tear when the card is cut, so we may suggest softening a corner.
How big should the window be?
Leave a border of card so the box stays stiff. A border of roughly 8 mm around the cut is a sensible starting point on a 90 x 60 x 25 mm box.
| Window size | What shows | Works well for |
|---|---|---|
| Small, about a fifth of the front | One colour or a corner of the swirl | Boxes with a busy printed front |
| Medium, about a third | The main swirl and some top texture | Most 100 g bars |
| Large, about half | The full face of the bar | Simple print where the soap is the design |
| Full front frame | Almost the whole bar | Kraft boxes with a thin printed border |
These are starting points only. We place the patch on your proof so you can judge it before anything is cut.
Will the film keep a curing bar happy?
Film keeps fingers off the bar and nothing more. It does not let the bar breathe, so cure properly before you pack.
A cold process bar usually needs weeks on a rack to lose water and firm up. Pack it early and it can sweat, and card can mark where damp soap touches it. Fragrance oils can bleed into kraft as well, leaving a darker patch beside the window. If you are unsure, box one bar and leave it a week before you order a run.
Our guide to window patches and moisture goes into this in more detail.
Kraft or white card for a window box
Kraft card gives a warm, natural look and hides small scuffs. Colours print a little softer on it, and a white ink panel can lift a logo clear of the brown. White card gives brighter, truer colour, which suits pastel bars and fine detail.
Both take full colour, one or two ink colours, and print inside the lid. For more on the natural option, see our kraft soap boxes.
Soft-touch, matt, gloss, foil, spot varnish and embossing can all be added when we quote. Soft-touch feels lovely but shows fingermarks, so a matt finish is kinder at a busy stall.
Ordering window boxes, step by step
The route is short. Begin on the quote page for your boxes or message us on WhatsApp.
- Measure your bar in mm (length, width, height) and weigh it in grams.
- Choose the box style, board and window shape.
- Send your logo and any ideas with those sizes.
- Receive your quote by email within one working day.
- Approve the free design proof, which shows exactly where the window sits.
- Production takes 4 to 6 working days after proof approval.
- Free tracked UK mainland delivery arrives in 2 to 3 working days.
Laying out artwork around the window
The window changes how you lay out print. Keep your logo and name clear of the cut, and keep small text away from the edges where the film is glued. Many makers put the brand name above the window and the scent and weight below. Print inside the lid for a short note, a care line or a thank-you.
If you want to try a layout first, the Design Your Soap Box page is a good place to start.
Cosmetic rules apply to soap sold in the UK, and the usual labelling is the product name, weight, ingredients and the maker's details, so decide which panel of a window box carries each line. Check the current UK cosmetics rules and leave room for that text on the box or on a label.
Packing window boxes for posting
The window is the weak spot. Card around a cut is less stiff, so a box knocked in a parcel can crease beside the film. Pack boxes tight with no loose space, and choose a mailer that fits snugly. Keep heavy parcels off the top of the pile.
Bars shrink slightly as they cure, so a bar boxed too early can slide about. Measure after curing, not before. Our notes on packing soap for posting cover the rest of the parcel.
How does a window box order go from quote to doorstep?
Every order is quoted by email within one working day, with the style, window and finishes you asked for. Boxes start from £0.25 a box, and low minimums are quoted per job, so a small batch of a new scent is no problem.
Your free proof arrives first and shows the film patch against the artwork, so you can check the window before approving. Once you approve it, production takes 4 to 6 working days. Delivery is free, tracked and goes to UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days. If a misprint or damage turns up, tell us within 10 days and we reprint or refund.

More answers in Help, or call +44 7578 382054 or message us on WhatsApp.
What box size fits a 90 x 60 x 25 mm bar?
The box inside comes out at about 92 x 62 x 27 mm, which is your bar plus about 2 mm each way. That is a snug fit for a bar of about 100 g.
Can the window be any shape?
Yes. Rectangles, ovals, circles and wavy edges are all common. We check unusual shapes at proof, since very thin points can tear when the card is cut.
What is the window made from?
A clear film patch glued behind the cut-out. It keeps fingers off the bar while letting the colour and swirl show.
Can I choose kraft or white card?
Yes. Kraft card gives a natural look and white card gives brighter colour. Both take full colour print, and kraft can also carry a white ink panel.
Will oils from my soap mark the box?
They can. Fragrance oils may bleed into card, and a bar that is still sweating can leave marks. Let bars cure first, and test one box before a full run.
Can I use window boxes for round bars?
Yes, a round window suits a round bar well. Shampoo bars are often about 65 mm across, and our shampoo bar boxes are made for that shape.
Can I order a different size for each scent?
Yes, if the bars differ in size. Each size is quoted per job, with low minimums, so tell us the mm for every bar when you ask.
Can I see the design before printing?
Yes. You approve a free proof first, so you can judge the window position and shape before any card is cut.
How long will my order take?
Making and printing a window box run takes 4 to 6 working days from the day you approve the proof. Delivery is free, tracked and takes 2 to 3 working days to UK mainland addresses.
How much card should I leave around the window?
Leave a border of roughly 8 mm around the cut on a 90 x 60 x 25 mm box so the front stays firm. Wider windows leave less card holding the corners, so check the patch position on the proof.
Do I need to print ingredients on the box?
Most soap sold in the UK is labelled with its name, weight, ingredients and the maker's details, so plan space for those lines on the back or lid of a window box. Cosmetic rules apply, so check the current UK cosmetics rules.
Can I add foil or print inside the lid?
Yes. Foil, matt, gloss, soft-touch, spot varnish and embossing are options on the quote, and the inside of the lid can be printed too.
