Check your bar first

Measure a cured bar in mm and weigh it in grams. The box inside is your bar plus about 2 mm each way, so the insert grips without squeezing.

Not sure of the layout?

Send your bar sizes by email or WhatsApp on +44 7578 382054 and we will come back within one working day with a suggested slot plan.

Soap Boxes with Inserts

Nothing is printed until you approve the proof.

What is a soap box with an insert?

A soap box with an insert is a printed box with a card piece folded inside it, cut to give every bar its own place. Nothing slides, and one bar never rubs against the next. The insert also lifts the bars a little, so the display looks neat the moment the lid comes off.

It works for a single 100 g bar, a trio from one batch, a pair of round bars or a four-bar sampler. If you are weighing it against a plain lidded box, our soap gift boxes for sets page covers the wider choice.

How do you measure for an insert?

Measure the bar after it has cured, not the day you cut it. Bars shrink slightly as water leaves, and a slice straight from the loaf can be a few millimetres bigger than the finished bar.

  1. Weigh and measure three cured bars: length, width and height in mm.
  2. Take the largest reading on each side and add about 2 mm each way. That is 1 mm a side.
  3. For a set, decide whether the bars lie flat in a row or stand upright, and note the gap you want between them.
  4. For round bars, measure the widest point across, then the height.
  5. Send the sizes with your logo and we draw the box and insert together on one proof.

A bevelled edge or a rounded corner from a loaf cutter changes how much room a bar needs, so say so if your edges are not square.

Which insert layout suits which set?

These are starting points. Every insert is cut to your bars, so read the table as a guide rather than a fixed menu.

Kraft or white card for the box and insert?

White card gives pastels and fine type a clean base, which is why a pale green or yellow box looks so crisp. Kraft has a natural brown tone that suits earthy ranges, and a white ink panel on kraft lets your logo show in a lighter colour. Our kraft soap boxes in detail page shows how that plays out.

The insert can be a different board from the box. A kraft insert inside a white card lid is a simple way to add contrast. Print can be full colour, one or two ink colours, or inside the lid for a short message the customer finds on opening.

On the quote you can choose embossing, foil, spot varnish, or a matt, gloss or soft-touch coat. Soft-touch feels lovely in the hand at a market stall, though it can show fingermarks, so ask us what we would choose for your colours.

Can customers see the bars through a window?

Yes. A window patch in clear film can be cut in any shape, so a round bar gets a round window and a row of three gets a long one. The film keeps fingers off the bar while people look, and the insert keeps each bar centred behind the glass-clear patch.

One warning from the bench: a bar that is still sweating can mark card, and fragrance oil can bleed into it. Let bars cure and dry fully before they go in. Our note on window patches and moisture explains what to look for.

Does a cured bar still need to breathe?

Box bars once they have finished curing. A bar that is still losing water wants air, and a shut lid traps it. If you must pack early, leave the lid off the display box for a while.

A snug insert helps a strong fragrance stay put on the shelf rather than drifting across the shop, but oil can still creep into bare card. Test one box with your scent before you order a full run. Ash on a cold process top or a rough textured top will also rub a smooth insert, so tell us how your tops look.

What should you send us for a quote?

A short message is enough. Email info@thesoapboxes.co.uk or use WhatsApp, and we reply with a quote by email within one working day. This is what helps most:

  • Cured bar size in mm and weight in grams
  • How many bars sit in each box
  • Round or rectangular bars, and whether edges are bevelled
  • Kraft or white card for the box and the insert
  • Your logo file, or a rough idea if you have not made one yet
  • Whether you want a window patch and any finish

No artwork yet? Open Design Your Soap Box to place your logo on a box and see how it sits.

What happens after you ask for a quote?

Pricing starts from £0.25 a box, and the final figure depends on size, board, print and insert. Once you accept it, we send a free design proof before anything is printed. Change what you like, then approve it.

Production takes 4 to 6 working days after proof approval. Once the boxes are made, tracked delivery to the UK mainland costs you nothing and takes 2 to 3 working days. When you are ready, ask for a quote by email with your bar details.

What should go on the box besides your logo?

Plan your wording to cover the product name, weight, ingredients and who made the soap, because cosmetic rules apply to bars sold in the UK. Check the current UK cosmetics rules before you lock your wording.

A long ingredient list needs space, so mention it early. The back panel or the inside of the lid often works best, which leaves the front clean for your name and scent. Our custom printed soap boxes page has more on layouts.

Will the box survive posting?

A snug insert is the best protection a bar gets in the post. The bars cannot rattle, so corners stay sharp. Even so, a printed box alone can be squashed in a sorting bag, so put it inside a stronger outer carton with a little paper around it. Packing soap for posting shows how other makers do it.

Who orders boxes with inserts?

Makers who sell sets at markets and in gift shops are the usual buyers: three bars from one batch in a row, or a pair of round bars for a shampoo duo. Hotels and guest houses order a two-bar set for the room. Wedding and birthday favour makers like one bar in a slot because it looks finished before any ribbon goes on.

Soap Boxes with Inserts questions

More answers in Help, or call +44 7578 382054 or message us on WhatsApp.

What is the difference between an insert and a tray?

A tray is a shallow piece the bar sits on. An insert can have raised walls, slots or cut-outs that keep bars upright or apart. Both are card, and we cut either one to your bar.

Can the insert hold round bars?

Yes. We cut circular openings for round shampoo bars and similar soaps, often about 65 mm across. Tell us the diameter and height and we draw it on the proof.

How many bars fit in one box?

One to four is typical. Longer boxes with more slots can be made. Give us your bar count and cured size and we confirm the layout on the proof.

Is the insert printed too?

It can be. Print the insert in one or two ink colours, or leave it plain white or kraft card. A plain insert often looks best when the lid carries the artwork.

Can I use one box size for different scents?

Yes. Keep the box and insert the same and change the artwork, a colour band or a paper label for each scent. Mention every version when you ask for a quote.

Will the insert stop my bars scuffing?

It stops them rubbing against each other and the lid, which is where most scuffs begin. Soft edges on a bar still need care when you load the box.

Can bars of different sizes share a box?

Yes, if you give us each size. We cut a slot for each bar, so a large bar and a small guest bar can sit together.

Do I need to cure the bars before boxing?

Yes. A bar that is still sweating can mark card, and it needs air while it loses water. Let it finish curing, then box it.

Can I add a window to a box with an insert?

Yes. The clear film patch can be any shape. It keeps fingers off the bar, and the insert holds the bar in view behind it.

What if my hand-cut bars vary in size?

Cutting by hand gives bars that differ by a millimetre or two. The allowance of about 1 mm a side copes with that. Send us measurements from three cured bars.

How long until my boxes arrive?

Once you approve the proof, making your insert boxes takes 4 to 6 working days. Free tracked delivery to the UK mainland then takes 2 to 3 working days.

What if the boxes arrive damaged or misprinted?

Tell us within 10 days and we reprint or refund. Full details are on our returns and reprints page.
