Window Patches and Moisture

A window patch lets a customer see the colour, swirl and cut of your bar before they pick it up. It also puts a bar close to film and card, so a little care over curing and sizing saves you a lot of misted panels and marked boxes.

What does a window actually do for a bar?

A cold process bar with a clean swirl sells itself on a market table, but only if people can see it. A window patch is a cut-out in the box with clear film stuck behind it. The film keeps fingers off the bar while shoppers look, and it lets the colour do the talking from a metre away.

That works for melt and pour too, where clear layers, embedded shapes and glitter edges are the whole point. It works less well for a plain, pale bar with no pattern, because a beige rectangle behind a window shows nothing a printed panel could not say better. Ask what the window will show before you ask how big it should be.

If you already know you want one, the window soap boxes page shows the styles we make.

Why does soap sweat?

Soap with plenty of glycerin pulls water out of the air, and melt and pour does it most of all. On a damp day, small beads form on the surface. Makers call it sweating. A cold process bar can do the same while it is still curing, or when it sits somewhere humid for a few days.

Here is what you will usually notice on the bench:

  • Beads or a tacky feel on the surface, worst on warm, damp days.
  • Fragrance oil marks that darken whatever the bar rests on.
  • Faint rings inside the film where beads formed and then dried.
  • Soft spots where a bar leans against the card.

None of this means the soap is faulty. It means the bar and its pack need to agree before you seal anything.

How big should the window be?

Start from the bar, not the box. The box inside is the bar plus about 2 mm each way, and the window needs a solid frame of card around it so the film has something to hold on to. A border of about 11 mm works well for most bars.

The table below gives starting points for the common UK sizes. Our guide to soap box sizes by bar weight covers the rest.

85 x 60 x 30 mm110 g87 x 62 x 32 mm65 x 40 mmabout 11 mm

These are guides, not rules. A round shampoo bar about 65 mm across suits a round window of around 45 mm. Every window is checked on the free design proof before anything is printed.

Should the window go on the front, the top or a side?

It depends on how the bar will be seen. A top window suits a box that lies flat on a shelf or in a hotel bathroom basket, where people look down at it. A 75 x 50 x 25 mm guest bar with a small lid window lets housekeeping spot the soap type without opening anything.

A front window suits a box that stands upright on a gift shop shelf, and tuck end soap boxes take one neatly. A side window is rarer, but it works when you want a loaf slice shown edge on so every layer is visible.

Keep the window away from the fold lines. Film that crosses a crease will lift in time.

What does sweat do to card and film?

Card is paper, so it takes up moisture and fragrance oil. A bar that is still sweating can leave a darker mark on the card where it rests, and oily scent can spread into the board over a few days. We do not claim the card or the film will resist that. Window film keeps fingers off the bar. It is not a seal.

Film can also mist. If a slightly warm or damp bar goes into a closed box, tiny drops form inside the patch and later dry into faint rings. The fix is patience at the packing stage, not more film.

If your bars are prone to oily scent, a loose layer of soap wrapping paper between bar and box can take the first mark instead of the card.

How do you check a bar is ready for its box?

Run through these steps before you commit to a print run:

  1. Let cold process bars finish their cure on the rack, as long as your own recipe needs, until they feel firm and dry.
  2. Weigh one sample bar, leave it on the rack for a week, then weigh it again. If the weight has stopped dropping, most of the water has gone.
  3. Press a thumb on the underside. A bar that dents or feels tacky needs longer.
  4. Leave a bar on plain paper for a day in the room where you pack. Look for oil rings or damp patches.
  5. Pack one bar into a sample box, close it, and leave it for a week somewhere with normal room warmth. Check the film and the card behind it.
  6. Only then pack the batch.

Melt and pour has no cure, so wrap or box it once it is fully set and cool, and run the paper test on a humid day.

Kraft card or white card behind a window?

Kraft is a darker, warmer board. It hides a faint ring better than white card, though it can still mark. A white ink panel on kraft gives your logo a clean patch to sit on beside the window, and our guide to kraft soap boxes shows how that looks.

White card gives the brightest colour printing and the sharpest edges around a window. It also shows every oil spot, so it asks more of your curing routine.

Printing inside the lid is a useful trick. A solid colour behind the bar makes a swirl stand out through the film, and it hides small marks on the inside face.

How do you protect a windowed box in the post?

The window is the weak point in a posted parcel. A knock can push the film against the bar, and a crushed corner can crack the patch. Pack boxes snugly, windows facing the same way, with paper between layers so nothing slides.

Stand a heavy bar like a 150 g one on its edge rather than letting it press on the film from above. For more ideas, read packing soap for posting.

When your boxes reach you, delivery is free, tracked and covers the UK mainland in 2 to 3 working days. Check the corners as soon as the parcel arrives.

What should you send when you ask for window boxes?

Send the bar size in mm, the weight in grams, the soap type (cold process, hot process or melt and pour) and a photo of the bar. Tell us what you want seen through the window: the top swirl, a cut edge or a loaf slice.

Prices start from £0.25 a box. If you want matt, gloss, soft-touch, foil, spot varnish or embossing around the window, mention it in your email and it goes onto the quote. You can ask for a quote and we reply by email within one working day.

You get a free design proof before anything is printed, and production takes 4 to 6 working days after you approve it. If a misprint or damage is reported within 10 days, it is reprinted or refunded.

How big should the window be on a box for a 90 x 60 x 25 mm bar?

About 70 x 40 mm. That leaves roughly 11 mm of card all round, enough for the film to grip and for the box to stay rigid. We check the exact cut on the proof.

Can I box a bar that is still curing?

It is better to wait. A bar that has not finished curing is softer and wetter, so it is more likely to sweat, mark the card and mist the film.

Why has my window film gone misty?

Usually a slightly warm or damp bar was boxed and closed. Water collected inside the patch and then dried. Let bars cool and dry on the rack, then pack them.

Will sweating soap stain kraft card?

It can leave a darker mark, and oily fragrance can spread into the board. We do not promise the card will resist it. Cure your bars fully and test one sample first.

How close can the window sit to the edge of the box?

Leave about 11 mm of card between the window and the box edge, and keep clear of folds and glue flaps. Film stretched over a crease tends to lift, and the proof shows exactly where your cut-out lands.

Does the film stop scent escaping?

Do not rely on it. The film keeps fingers off the bar, but a box with a window is not a sealed pack, so some scent can still leave over time.

Do bath bombs suit a window box?

Often, yes. A 65 mm round bomb looks good behind a round window of about 45 mm. Keep the bombs dry while you pack, since damp is what spoils them.

Can I show the bar without a window?

Yes. You can print the swirl or pattern on the box, or use a sleeve that leaves the bar visible on its long faces. A plain bar often looks better that way.

How do I tell sweat from fragrance oil bleed?

Sweat shows as small beads or a sticky film that comes and goes with the weather. Oil bleed leaves a dull, spreading stain on paper that stays put.

What if my window boxes arrive misprinted or damaged?

If the film arrives cracked or a window is cut in the wrong place, tell us within 10 days and the job is reprinted or refunded. The details are on our returns and reprints page.
